Last month, the Kooopa Token project announced their rebrand into Kart Racing League, a play-to-earn NFT game similar to Axie Infinity. Kart Racing League or KRL is a fast-paced kart racing game where players control unique 3D NFT characters and can earn rewards in cryptocurrency for winning races.

Timing for KRL seems to be impeccable as large gaming corporations and VC’s alike pile cash into the space. Even Epic Games, Inc. and Sony Group Corp. (NYSE: SONY) are investing in these metaverse-type games, with Epic raising over $1 billion, of which $200 million was contributed by Sony.

One of the most popular games in the play-to-earn NFT arena is Axie Infinity, which is a 2D turn-based game where players battle NFTs. The game has grossed over $1.1 billion in NFT sales of their simple Pokémon-inspired creatures.

Kart Racing League appears to be taking play-to-earn gaming to the next level. The KRL team are building on the business model of Axie Infinity, incorporating 3D NFTs rather than 2D characters. In addition, the multiplayer gameplay involved in KRL is very engaging when compared with the turn-based style of Axie.

Similar to Axie’s governance token AXS, Kart Racing League is powered by KOO tokens (or Kooopa). These tokens will be utilized for tournaments, payments, staking, and project governance. In addition, KRL is releasing another cryptocurrency on launch called Essence of Creation, which will be an inflationary currency like Axie’s Smooth Love Potion (or SLP).

Something unique to KRL is that they will allow owners of their Racer NFTs to borrow and lend their NFTs to other players in return for fixed income, allowing those with less capital to participate on a temporary basis.

Axie Infinity became popular amid the COVID-19 pandemic as people in the developing world needed new ways of earning a living by working from home. Play-to-earn games empower these individuals and, as the space grows, it is likely more games like Kart Racing League will emerge on the market.
